Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)
The Register of Exercise Professionals is an UK scheme for fitness instructors and trainers. It recognizes industry-based certifications, provides public liability coverage and requires that participants work within an industry code.
It was disbanded in 2020 and its members migrated to CIMSPA. What do this mean for fitness professionals?
How do I become a rep an REP?
If you are already a member of Prospect already, speak to the person in charge of your branch about becoming rep. There isn't a fixed amount of time it takes and it will depend on whether you're able to carry out union duties during work time (sometimes called facility time) and the amount of free time you have. You can't be disciplined simply because you are a union rep, and there are laws that protect you from being victimized. Some branches have equality avon reps, such as a women's officer or a black members' representative.
What is CIMSPA?
CIMSPA is the UK-based professional body for health and fitness professionals is an industry-recognized body that regulates trainers. Its purpose is to safeguard the public's trust in the services of fitness experts by ensuring that they possess all the necessary abilities, technical expertise, training and insurance. It is also responsible for maintaining and developing professional standards for the fitness industry.
The organization brings together input from a range of stakeholders including employers, deployers and NGBs as in higher education institutions, training providers, and practitioners in order to shape the industry and help its professionals and workforce. This is accomplished through collaboration with the industry to understand and recognize the needs of the profession and the barriers affecting the ability of the profession to provide.
As part of its mission, CIMSPA provides the framework for the quality assurance system in fitness professionals in the form of an endorsement process. This process recognises both the content and the quality of formal qualifications and training. CIMSPA will usually endorse the regulated (Ofqual), qualifications that are certified by an approved awarding body like Focus Awards or Active IQ and also certain types continuing professional development (CPD) training.
Membership of CIMSPA also confers a degree of status within the industry. Members can access specialist insurance, including public liability coverage of up to PS10m and personal accident coverage. It also lets members keep a record of their professional development. Members can enroll in online courses for free and Uk Rep access an online career site that is updated regularly with new job opportunities.
The body is also an affiliate of the International Confederation of Registers for Exercise Professionals (ICREPs), meaning that its members can use their registration to work abroad provided they have the relevant qualification. The body strives to establish standards that are consistent across the globe, which will assist in the development of the industry.
The CIMSPA Academy is a non-profit organization and collaborates with the industry to provide assistance, guidance, and education. The CIMSPA Academy also offers its members free online courses on a variety of topics that are relevant to the industry.
Are REPs qualifications recognised internationally?
The Register of Exercise Professionals was an independent public registry that operated under an membership system. It was designed to protect the public in addition to giving fitness professionals and employers peace of mind that they worked with an individual who had been certified and recognized qualifications which aligned with National Occupational Standards.
REPs was an UK based register and, as such, only covered the UK fitness industry. It was not a requirement to be registered with REPs, but it did give clients the confidence that their fitness professional was certified and operated to the highest standards.
In 2020, REPs will be sold to uk rep (agree with this) Coaching. An agreement with CIMSPA has been reached that will combine the REPs Directory with the CIMSPA directory. Fitness professionals are still able to join both REPs as well as CIMSPA. However renewal of avon reps membership is no longer be possible.
ICREPs, which connects international fitness professionals with international registers, has a global presence. This means that if you're REPs registered in the UK you can transfer to work as personal trainers in other ICREPs countries such as Australia, Ireland, Poland, South Africa and UAE.
It is important to note, however, that REPs cannot guarantee the employment of fitness professionals or insurance coverage. REPs, which is an association for industry and not a governing authority, is a voluntary association. Top international certification bodies like ACSM, NSCA ISSA NASM and ACE are not affiliated with REPs. REPs will not provide insurance or employment for their fitness professionals.
Having said that REPs is committed making sure that their members are up to date with the ever-changing trends within the fitness industry. This is the reason REPs has a REPs points system that requires members to obtain certain number of REPs points each year in order to keep their REPs status. These REPs are determined by the level of qualification that the member has and the number of CPD courses they have attended.
